Who We Support » Penumbra Case Study

Penumbra has been providing services for people with mental health problems since 1985.

Penumbra's services and operations are best identified in 3 broad areas of activity: promoting mental health and wellbeing, preventing mental ill health and supporting people who have mental health problems.

Traditionally, Penumbra has been seen as a service provider for people with mental health problems but increasingly our activities also highlight the importance of mental wellbeing for the whole population. We are particularly pleased that people who use our services are now being supported to speak out and share their experiences which provides hope and inspiration to others.

We were delighted in the past year to be awarded the contract to develop in partnership with key stakeholders, the Edinburgh Crisis Service. This is a 24/7 service where people experiencing social and emotional distress can get support, help and guidance. A 24 hour helpline is also available.

We have also been awarded a contract to develop supported accommodation and supported living services in Glasgow for people with Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD).

We continue to 'expect recovery' for everyone who uses our services. We pride ourselves on being hopeful and positive whilst also practical and encouraging in the work we do supporting people with mental health problems.

Penumbra continues to be involved in both the Scottish Executive's 'see me' awareness campaign and the Scottish Recovery Network and this, combined with our increasing training and consultancy work in promoting mental health and wellbeing show that the environment for improving mental health in Scotland is very positive.
